Workshop on how to write promotional copy

Principles of persuasive writing

  • Use basic principles of good writing
  • Use persuasive writing techniques, such as be specific rather than general, use verbs rather than nouns
  • Think of your audience and the benefits for them
  • Write in keeping with your brand and ethics

Writing for the web

  • Use online writing principles — short, headings, chunks etc.
  • Integrate words and design
  • Make it easy for your customers/clients to buy from you — answer objections, provide all the relevant information etc.

Writing e-newsletters

  • Follow the 5Cs of effective e-newsletters — conventions, content, credibility, community and commerce.

Writing advertisements

  • Use the principle that less is more
  • Gain attention with headlines and compelling body copy
  • Integrate words and design

Writing direct mail

  • Find the hook or angle that will get attention
  • Have an offer and call to action
  • Concentrate on getting the first paragraph ‘right’

Writing flyers

  • Grab attention with a headline and design
  • Be concise, yet specific
  • Pay attention to detail — check you've included all the necessary information

Writing media releases

  • Find an angle
  • Use an inverted pyramid structure with your key messages upfront
  • Use spokespeople if appropriate
